Age
There are no minimum or maximum age limits.
Education
There are no national minimal entry requirements however it would be expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade C or above including English and a science subject.
Application from other educational backgrounds are also considered, for example:
- Five CSEs grade 1
- Five SCE Standard grade 1s (Scotland)
- GNVQ intermediate level plus one GCSE/GCE O level, grades A-C
Examples of qualifications that may be considered broadly equivalent to two A-levels include:
- GNVQ advanced level or NVQ level 3
- SVQ level 3
- GSVQ level 3 (Scotland)
- EDEXCEL Foundation (BTEC) National or higher national diploma
- OCR Cambridge Technicals – Health and Social Care at level 3.
Criminal Record Check
There is a requirement for everyone to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Having a police caution or a criminal conviction may not necessary prevent you from working in the NHS, each conviction is considered in the light of all relevant circumstances.
Driving
A full, clean driving license would be beneficial, some will aim to have a driving license by the end of the training.
Character
You will need to be in good health and character for safe and effective practice as a midwife.
Appearance
Each university and hospital will have an appearance policy but tends to include:
- Short fingernails, free from varnish. False nail or extensions are not permitted.
- Hair should be clean, tidy and away from the face. Hair should be off the uniform collar at all times.
Jewellery
- Plain single wedding band only
- One plain stud earring only
- No bracelets
- No wristwatches, below the elbow should be bare
- Tattoo’s should not be visible
- Any body piercing to the face should be removed while on duty
Behaviors
Have great communication skills, be well presented, answer the questions fully, demonstrate good body language and passion for being a midwife are all key to being a midwife.
