“I have been qualified for 4 years and after having my children I decided that it would be better work flexible hours to suit my family. A local hospital was advertising for bank midwives and I thought this would be the perfect solution.”
Recalling experiences
I had not been to an interview since I applied for my first job, so brushing up on interview techniques was really important. I thought of different examples of leadership, team working, and difficult situations and reflected on these events and filed them in my portfolio. I read publications that were written in the last year to discuss and had all my certificates ready to show.
Applying for somewhere new is always daunting as you are out of your comfort zone. This interview was just a discussion with two midwives, one asking the questions and the other writing comments and scoring me as I went along.
I had to keep reminding myself to breath and include a bit of humor to make everyone (most of all me!) feel at ease.
Doing your homework
I thought I would be more comfortable with my interview if I knew more about the hospital, so I did my homework. I found out about the hospital, their goals, their birthrate and that they were really passionate about homebirths and breastfeeding, so I managed to tailor the conversation around that.
I did not need to demonstrate any of my skills in the interview, it just felt like quite an informal discussion and they immediately made me feel at ease and welcomed which I was grateful for’.
